Since the early days of folk and pagan metal Skyforger have been hammering out a unique sound for themselves by combining traditional Baltic song with early Scandinavian black metal and more recently with 80’s heavy metal.
They’ve experienced considerable success with previous albums Thunderforge (folk/pagan metal) and Sword Song (acoustic Latvian folk) both released in 2003 since which the band has kept busy playing plenty of energetic live shows across Europe while contemplating their long-awaited 5th full length. Kurbads is Skyforger’s first release via major label Metal Blade Records and is a concept album following a historical Latvian story of a legendary hero, for whom the album is titled, in an epic tale of his fight against evil.
Kurbads is rooted more deeply in heavy metal than I expected with a surprisingly thrashy tilt, characterized by plenty of tantalizing riffs, energetic melodies, and a distinctive, albeit unusual, brand of raucous shouts/growls. A lingering black metal influence is detectable at times, subdued compared to previous works, but, fear not old listeners; the band still has a strong affinity for all things folk and pagan.
Traditional instruments such as bagpipes, Latvian kokle, and flute add another dimension to the music and despite the bagpipes coming through a little strong at times they don’t go overboard with the folk elements. I admit at first the bagpipes were difficult to digest as I’ve never heard them used in such a way before but through a few listens I’ve come to appreciate the unique cultural flair added to the music. Ultimately, the riffs throughout “The Last Battle” convinced me they elevate the music and carry the melodies in just the right places.
The opening track “Curse of the Witch” sets a heavy standard but stands apart from the rest of the album in every regard. “Son of the Mare” is a more accurate representation of what’s to come in subsequent songs with the introduction of folk melodies and strong, solid galloping rhythms that permeate throughout Kurbads. Most of the album is mid-paced though songs like “The Devilslayer” and “Black Rider” range upwards in speed and intensity.
I expect Kurbads is accessible to not only fans of folk metal but also to those more accustomed to thrash or classic heavy metal. It isn’t for everyone, but by keeping an open mind I think you’ll find quite a few things to like about Skyforger as they do an admirable job of blending the boundaries of different genres while adhering to their cultural roots.
Despite the influx of folk metal bands in recent years we mustn’t forget Skyforger is actually one of the originals to experiment with folk and metal and I have to give them credit for not sounding like anyone else out there.
